Buff Body of the Week: the Old Spice Guy

This week's Buff Body puts the "Spice" in Old Spice...

old_spice_isaiah_mustafa.jpg
His name is Isaiah Mustafa and can you believe that he was actually tending bar -- making gin & tonics for tips -- before hitting it big with this commercial:

Ha! I laugh every time I see that video; and even though my man doesn't find it funny, there are plenty of others who do. The commercial has garnered more than 15 million views on YouTube (as of July 23, 2010).

But just who is the so-called "Man Your Man Could Smell Like?"

Mustafa is a retired NFL wide receiver who had stints with the Seattle Seahawks and the Tennessee Titans in the early 2000s before getting into acting.

He must have not managed his money right because People magazine reports that Mustafa was working as a bartender before hitting it big when his Old Spice commercial debuted during the Super Bowl.

Since then, he's undoubtedly the most popular guy in the deodorant aisle, making the inexpensive line of men's antiperspirant cool again.

Buff Body of the Week - Fola Awosika

I found this week's Buff Body in the produce aisle at the Giant in D.C. on Park Road...

fola_color.jpg
His name is Fola Awosika and he is the co-owner of TRI Fitness, an on-site personal training service based in Washington, DC that promises to whip Washingtonians into shape one bicep curl at a time.

OK, so it's no secret that exercise is the key to this personal trainer's Buff Body, but when I asked Fola what he ate in order to keep his bod in such tip-top shape, he said:

"Simple carbs: post workout and first thing in the morning. Complex carbs: through out the day and night, as well as pre-workout."

Huh?!?! Since I'm too stoopid to know the difference between a simple carb and a complex one, I 'Googled' the terms and this is what I found:

Simple Carbs:

Simple carbohydrates are also called simple sugars and are chemically made of one or two sugars... They are absorbed quickly -- just think how fast sugar-based candy melts in your mouth. Simple carbs also include foods such as fruit and milk.

Complex Carbs:

Grains such as bread, pasta, oatmeal and rice are complex carbs, as well as some vegetables like broccoli, corn legumes such as kidney beans and chick peas. They take the longest to digest.

Alright, that seems simple (and complex) enough. But I'm still a bit confused. If anybody out there has more buff body nutrition tips, then please leave a note in the comments section below. And, if you wanna nominate yourself or someone you know for Buff Body of the Week, then send an e-mail to: dconheels@gmail.com.

Dysfunctional celebrity dads we (can't help but) love:

david_hasselhoff.jpg
David Hasselhoff: What the heck was he thinking?!?! I'm sure his daughters got beat up in school the day this photo came out.

bobby_brown_mug_shot.jpg
Bobby Brown: Bobby Christina must be so proud!

charlie_sheen_mug_shot.jpg
Charlie Sheen: Way to go, Daddy Sheen, with the domestic violence allegations! I'm sure you're a great example for your twin sons with wifey Brooke Mueller of how to treat a lady.

marion_barry_wikipedia.jpg
Marion "A B!@%ch Set Me Up" Barry: There's no pops who tops this DC dad, who is a former mayor, current city councilman... and true DC original!

And last, but certainly not least...

Alec Baldwin: In this infamous voice mail, he promised to fly from 30 Rock to Los Angeles for one day, just to bust a cap in his daughter's behind. Now that's love!

And now, we interrupt our regularly scheduled programming to bring you the Buff DADDY of the Week!

Buff Body of the Week & the Gift Basket Winner

I feel a "situation" coming on!

mike_sorrentino_situation.jpg
He's baa-aaaack! Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino is coming back to prime time when the cast of "Jersey Shore" take on Miami this summer. The show premieres July 29 at 10 p.m. on MTV... but Mike doesn't want you to have to wait until then to check out his awesome abs.

Oh no, this self-proclaimed "Guito" is showing off his BUFF BOD any chance he gets... and he shamelessly admits that it's all for the ladies. Yeah girls, he actually says on the show he's just out to have a good time with any good-looking girl who's willing. Ugh!

This should be motivation for all you soft and squishy nice guys out there to get in shape! Girls don't want a jerk, but it can be hard to pass up a ripped body. (The mind may be willing to refuse the temptation, but the flesh is weak! Ladies, can I get an amen?)

So fellas, don't let this hard-bodied wise guy show you up on the beach this summer! Hit the gym and take on The Situation's philosophy of G-T-L (gym, tan, laundry) and show the world that nice guys can have BUFF BODIES, too.

xoxo,

Beyonce, Buff Bodies of the World Cup & why we love short shorts!

This week's Buff Bodies will make you fall in love "short shorts" all over again.

Gooooooaaaaaaal!

World famous photographer Annie Liebovitz shoots and scores with the special World Cup June issue of Vanity Fair where she captures the essence of some of the biggest stars in "futbol."

Come June 11, the start of the World Cup, South Africa will be the playground for these Buff Bodies, where they'll trade in their flag shorts for a chance to wave their country's flag in the air as they compete for the title of World's best (eh-hum) "soccer" team.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

Denim short shorts become a hot American commodity. Denimology reports that Beyonce has officially launched the Spring/Summer 2010 trend by dressing up a pair of True Religion jean shorts with Christian Louboutin "Maggie" heels on a date night with hubbie Jay-Z in New York City.

Other stars who are trading in their mini-skirts for denim short shorts:

Surprise, Surprise!
Lindsay Lohan in J Brand Denim shorts

Jessica Alba in Divine Rights of Denim relaxed shorts

Vanessa Hudgens in Diesel denim shorts

Buff Body of the Week... and why GREEN is the new Black

It's Earth Day and this week's Buff Body makes being green look so hot...

He's a shirtless staple in all of the gossip magazines, but people aren't talking about his moves on the big screen as much as they are oodling over his moves on the beach.

An avid surfer, runner and paddleboarder (check out his latest action pic in the April 26 issue of People) Matthew McConaughey is also one pretty green dude.

Star magazine reported that when McConaughey and girlfriend Camila Alves first found out they were going to be parents, they spent $1,200 on eco-friendly baby clothes, organic blankets and an untreated-wood crib.

Way to go Matt! Knowing this, I can almost forgive you for the $9.50 I spent to see "Fools Gold" and "Failure to Launch."

And now, my eco-friendly fashion report, starring Miley Cyrus and Audrina Patridge...

When it comes to Earth Day fashions, green is the new black.

Manufactured by the eco-friendly clothing line, Gypsy 05, Miley's top (Shreds Tunic Tee, $99) and Audrina's short pants (Nelly Silk Tube Jumper, $150) were both made with organic fabrics, low-impact dyes and water-based printing.

Inspired? Me, too. But since I can't actually afford a hundred dollar tunic, I'm going to dust off my old Hirachi sandals I bought in Mexico a few spring breaks ago (they weren't mass produced, so they should be eco-friendly, right?)

Hmm...

Well, if I did have a few bucks to spend in name of going green, then I would probably buy these sustainable and charitable products:

This graphic t-shirt made with organic cotton is so popular (since being featured in People StyleWatch magazine) that Los Angeles-based Kitson Boutique has sold out of their in-store inventory and now it is available only by pre-order.
FEED P4P Travel Bag & Skin Care Set, $95
Made from recycled nylon, the bag comes with Tammy Fender Holistic Skin Care line's Clay Body Wash and Tucuma Butter Body Balm. Proceeds from the sale of each bag supports farmers through the United Nations World Food Programme’s Purchase for Progress (P4P) initiative. The program was established to purchase food from local farmers to feed hungry people in under served regions around the world.

Buff Body of the Week - Ocho Cinco

It's Tax Day and this week's BUFF BODY has paid his dues...

...in the gym, that is!

Alright, since I did a little dig on pro athletes in my last blog post (sorry Tiger, Tiki and Ben - but you know you were wrong!), I thought I would help to bring "sexy back" to professional sports by celebrating one of the most prolific wide receivers in the NFL...

As a 9-year veteran of the Cincinnati Bengals, Chad Ochocinco (née Chad Johnson) holds the franchise record for the most receiving yards in a season; the most receiving yards of all time; the most receptions; the most receiving yards in a game; the most seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards; and the most touchdowns.

Whew! That was a mouthful. No wonder he's in ripped, right shape (I knew he had to be doing something more than just shimmying to the Paso Doble on Dancing with the Stars).

And while I question Ochocinco's sanity for being the only NFL player in league history to ever change his last name to match the numbers on his jersey (and in Spanish, nonetheless), I do not question No. 85's commitment to fitness... and that's why, folks, this fine piece of chocolate "man candy" wins this week's award for Buff Body of the Week.

And now, a moment of silence while we watch poetry in motion:

Enjoy that, did ya? (Me, too). Now, get back to work! Your job isn't paying you to read this blog!

Buff Body of the Week

He's a military rescue pilot... He's the heir to the British throne... And this week, not only is he rumored to be planning an elaborate engagement to his girlfriend of 7 years, Kate Middleton, but he's also my pick for Buff Body of the Week.

Ya know, it must be hard for a prince to keep his body in royal shape, what with access to world's finest restaurants and best chefs, in addition to having 24-hour room service at grand ma-ma's pad at Buckingham Palace. But I guess the notoriously bland cuisine of the British empire is what keeps his arms and pecs in beach-ready shape all year round.

Congratualtions, Prince William, on being our Buff Bod (and on the engagement)! I'll be looking for my invitation in the mail...

...But I won't be flying Spirit Air into Heathrow....

Now that the airline plans to charge travelers $45 for a carry-on bag, it may just be easier just to stay in town and enjoy a 'Date Night' my hard earned cash.

For two 20 dollar bills and a five-spot, here's how far both you and I can get on a 'Date Night' in DC:
  1. Buy two tickets to see the new movie, Date Night starring Tina Fey and Steve Carrell, plus purchase two regular cokes and a small popcorn.
  2. Purchase dinner for two at the reasonably priced new U Street eatery, Eatonville, which serves up Southern style comfort food in a trendy, relaxed environment (on weekends there's even live music).
  3. Play skee-ball (yes, roll the ball up that ramp, baby) at Old Dominion Brewhouse while enjoying $3 Absolut vodka drinks during Happy Hour.
Take that Spirit Air (and all other airlines who plan to follow suit)!

Buff Body of the Week

This week's Buff Bod award goes to someone who's recently been dissed in the media. That's right, Jersey Shore's Mike (a.k.a. The Situation) just landed on a Boston newspaper's list as one of the 100 Unsexiest Men of the Year.

Despite his commitment to fitness a la his GTL philosophy of hitting the Gym, Tanning and doing Laundry every day, not even his washboard abs and rock hard biceps could keep him off this list.

I suspect he made the list because of his horrid reputation with the ladies... and his tendency to try to take advantage of girls' vulnerabilities (think him kissing Snookie in the hot tub on their last night at the Shore).

Despite all of his short comings, though, The Situation was probably the most entertaining character to watch on the show and someone who you loved to laugh at, but just couldn't bring yourself hate.

At the very least, he deserves some credit for pulling himself out of bed every morning to actually do a bench press. And it is for this reason - and this reason alone -- that I am countering The Situation's unsexy status with an award for Buff Body of the Week.

xoxo,

-- Markette

P.S. -- If you watched Jersey Shore, then you know that The Situation also loves to cook BIG Italian meals... Wondering how you can get fit and mimic his cooking style? Here's a healthy Italian recipe courtesy of Cookinglight.com.

Chicken Scallopini

Total time: 22 minutes

Serves:
4

Menu:

  1. Orzo, tomato, and zucchini toss
Heat 1 teaspoon olive oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add 1 cup halved cherry tomatoes, 1 cup chopped zucchini, and 2 minced garlic cloves; sauté 2 minutes. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning and 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes; sauté 1 minute or until zucchini is crisp-tender. Combine tomato mixture, 3 cups hot cooked orzo, and 1/4 teaspoon salt; toss well.
  2. Garlic bread

Game Plan
1. While orzo cooks:
• Season and dredge chicken in breadcrumbs
• Chop tomatoes and zucchini

2. While chicken cooks:
• Cook tomato
• Heat garlic bread

Quick Tip: Use 2 teaspoons bottled minced garlic instead of fresh cloves for the orzo, tomato, and zucchini toss.

Buff Body of the Week

You know you have a buff body when...
You know you have a buff body when you're not afraid to show up half naked in Times Square to flaunt it for the masses. That's exactly what this week's Buff Body did.

I happened upon him while in New York City for the weekend. It was 10 p.m. on a Saturday night. All tattooed and oiled up (and with presumably nothing else to do) he had tied an elastic resistance band around a telephone poll and proceeded to do bicep curls right on the corner of Broadway. So, of course, I did what everybody was thinking. I approached him and asked what the heck he was doing. In response, he just smiled and murmurred something along the lines of, "Can't stop...won't stop... get it, get it."

Now that's what I call insane dedication (or maybe just plain insane)! Either way, he wins the first ever TTS award for fitness.
